THE MONTECRISTO
RELIEF ORGANIZATION
In the
fall of 2008, two horrific hurricanes, Georges and Mitch, devastated
the Caribbean leaving behind unimaginable destruction and suffering.
These storms killed over 11,000 people, injured millions more, and
left countless victims homeless and dispossessed of their economic
resources.
ALTADIS U.S.A. PROVIDES IMMEDIATE AID
The lives of thousands of people in areas of the Dominican Republic
and Honduras where Altadis U.S.A. maintains factories were severely
affected by the storms. Homes were badly damaged or totally destroyed,
as were schools and medical facilities. Altadis U.S.A., a company
that has always taken pride in giving back to its communities, immediately
provided over $1,000,000 in relief to help rebuild the lives of its
neighbors and employees.
MONTECRISTO RELIEF ORGANIZATION ESTABLISHED
TO PROVIDE ONGOING RELIEF
Then, in the spring of 1999, the company established the
Montecristo Relief Organization. To date, the millions of dollars
raised by the Organization have funded numerous charities as part
of a comprehensive and ongoing humanitarian effort to bring renewed
hope to victims devastated by hurricanes and other natural disasters.
REBUILDING HOMES AND LIVES
For the past 10 years, ongoing projects supported by the
Montecristo Relief Organization have included the construction of
new homes and schools in battered areas of the Dominican Republic,
Honduras, Nicaragua and neighboring countries. Damaged medical facilities
have been rebuilt and new ones constructed to provide continuing care
for the sick and injured. Hundreds of wheelchairs have been donated
for the disabled.
NEW SCHOOLS AND NEW OPPORTUNITIES
New schools have been built and scholarships have been
provided for children who would otherwise have not received educations.
Agricultural opportunities, such as the creation of Tilapia fish farms,
have enabled those in need to earn sustainable incomes. Funds have
also been donated to the Honduras Mission of Operation Smile, a wonderful
institution whose medical professionals work to repair severe childhood
facial deformities. One recent project of note is the building of
100 homes in Honduras on land purchased with funds from the Montecristo
Relief Organization.
OVER $1 MILLION DONATED TO KATRINA VICTIMS
When Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast in 2005, the
Relief Organization, along with parent company Altadis U.S.A., raised
over $1 million, which was donated to the American Red Cross to benefit
victims of this horrific storm.
YOUR SUPPORT MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Altadis U.S.A.'s vision of an ongoing humanitarian effort
has come to fruition thanks to the generosity of participants at the
Montecristo Cup, our annual charity Pro-Am golf tournament held at
the renown Casa de Campo Resort in the Dominican Republic, as well
as the generous support of our retailers and consumers. The financial
aid we have received has made a huge difference to those who depend
on us to help rebuild their lives. Today, as hurricanes of unprecedented
size and power pose a constant threat to the region, the Montecristo
Relief Organization will continue to respond to the needs of devastated
families.
The relief effort is ongoing, and the need for support remains strong.
